The Glaucoma Society KL & Selangor was founded by Stevens Chan in March 2009. We will officially be known as Malaysia Glaucoma Society (MGS) in March 2010 as we hope to serve all Malaysians in the fight to reduce unnecessary blindness.
To reduce unnecessary blindness, MGS has launched the on-going Save One Sight campaign in March 2009. The aim of Save One Sight is to raise funds so MGS can buy our own eye screening equipment including a retina camera and Tonometer, and a van to provide FREE eye screenings to all Malaysians. With our own equipment and a van to transport the tools of our trade, we can run eye screenings in poorer communities in rural areas, orphanages, old folks’ homes, schools, colleges and universities, corporate and governmental agencies during their Health Day events throughout Malaysia.
Stevens, who is officially blind now, found out he has glaucoma in 2002 when he suffered an excruciating migraine. At that stage, he was at the top of his game, running his own training company.
Since then, he has undergone 9 surgeries in both eyes but still cannot save his sight. Through MGS, he hopes to reach more people and tell them early detection can reduce unnecessary blindness. Early detection can help more people to find out if they are at risk or have early-stage glaucoma and seek treatment. As such, we can all “save one sight.”
MGS also aims to help newly-diagnosed glaucoma patients who are losing or have lost their sight and their families adjust to the new routines. Providing the support system can help new patients to come to terms with glaucoma and to give hope to them and their family. In time, when MGS has more financial and manpower resources, we hope to provide more services such as re-training for glaucoma patients.
Vision
